Back To School Home Reset

Back to School Cleaning: The Ultimate Home Reset Checklist

The end of the summer holidays is the perfect time to give your home a fresh start ahead of the new school year. As uniforms come out of storage, school shoes get dusted off, bags are packed and busy morning routines return, a clean and organised home can make the transition back to school much easier. And SonicScrubber is the perfect tool to help.

A back to school cleaning routine doesn't mean spending days scrubbing every corner of your home. By concentrating on the areas that have seen the most use over the summer, and putting a few simple routines in place, you can start the new school year with a home that feels fresher, calmer and easier to manage.

Here’s our practical back to school cleaning checklist, covering everything from floors and carpets to kitchens, bathrooms and everyday surfaces.

1. Declutter Before You Start Cleaning

Before reaching for the cleaning products, start by clearing away the clutter.

Over the summer, toys, paperwork, clothes, shoes and miscellaneous items can quickly accumulate. Spend some time putting things back where they belong and getting rid of anything you no longer need.

Try working through one area at a time:

  • Clear out drawers and cupboards.
  • Sort through old school paperwork.
  • Donate or recycle unwanted clothes and belongings.
  • Create a designated place for school bags, shoes and coats.
  • Clear kitchen worktops and other frequently used surfaces.

Decluttering first makes the actual cleaning much easier and gives you a more organised space to work with.

2. Give Carpets and Rugs a Deep Clean

Carpets can take a serious beating during the school holidays. Increased foot traffic, food spills, muddy shoes, dust and everyday debris can leave carpets looking tired by the end of summer.

Start by vacuuming thoroughly, paying particular attention to hallways, stairs and other high-traffic areas. Don't forget to vacuum underneath furniture and along skirting boards, where dust and dirt can easily collect.

For carpets that need more than a standard vacuum, consider a deeper carpet clean to lift embedded dirt and refresh the fibres.

It's also worth tackling individual stains before the school routine begins. Dealing with spills now means you're less likely to be faced with old, stubborn marks later.

3. Don't Forget Hard Floors

Hard floors deserve attention too, particularly in kitchens, hallways and bathrooms.

Begin by removing loose dirt, crumbs and dust with a vacuum, broom or suitable floor-cleaning tool. Follow this with mopping to remove the grime that a dry clean can't pick up. SonicScrubber is deal for getting first out of  the corners and edges that vacuums can't always reach. It has a lifting action, a bit like an electric toothbrush for your home, and you can follow up with a microfibre cloth or vac to clean the dirt it removes.

Pay extra attention to entrances and high-traffic areas. These are often the first places to show signs of dirt once school shoes start coming through the door again.

Many people recommend SonicScrubber for cleaning floor tile grout in kitchens and bathrooms. Make a bicarbonate of soda paste, a good quality cleaning paste (or even toothpaste) and use the medium (flat) brush head, or the cone (pointed) brush to get into gaps and corners. Once you   are done, rinse, wipe and see the difference. SonicScrubber oscillates, around 10,000 a minute, to lift dirt instead of rubbing it into the porous grout, like a manual brush or spin scrubber can.

Once your floor hashed a thorough clean, it's easier to maintain, so getting it back to a good starting point now can make your regular cleaning routine much quicker.

4. Clean the High-Touch Surfaces You Often Miss

Some of the surfaces that need cleaning most regularly aren't necessarily the ones we notice.

Before the new school year starts, wipe down frequently touched areas such as:

  • Door handles
  • Light switches
  • Bannisters
  • Remote controls
  • Desk surfaces
  • Cupboard handles
  • Fridge handles
  • Taps
  • Frequently used electronic surfaces, following the manufacturer's cleaning instructions

These areas can collect fingerprints, dust and everyday grime surprisingly quickly. Once you've given them a thorough clean, adding a quick wipe to your weekly routine can help prevent dirt from building up again.

Again, SonicScrubber is an excellent tool for getting into any nooks and crannies, around taps and handles for example.

5. Give the Kitchen a Back to School Reset

Once school starts, the kitchen can become one of the busiest rooms in the house.

Between breakfast, packed lunches, after-school snacks and evening meals, there isn't always time for a thorough clean. Getting ahead now can make those busy weekdays much easier.

Start with the basics:

  • Clean and organise the fridge.
  • Check use-by and best-before dates.
  • Wipe refrigerator shelves and drawers.
  • Clean the microwave.
  • Wipe down worktops and cupboard doors.
  • Clean the sink and taps.
  • Clear out unnecessary items from kitchen cupboards.
  • Wash reusable lunch bags and containers according to their care instructions.

Having a clean, organised kitchen also makes preparing school lunches and quick breakfasts much less stressful.

6. Refresh the Bathroom

The bathroom is another area worth tackling before the school routine gets underway.

Give the sink, taps, toilet, shower or bath and mirrors a thorough clean. Pay attention to areas where soap residue, limescale and everyday grime can accumulate.

SonicScrubber is a useful tool to speed up your cleaning behind taps, in the grout around tiles and along the edges of baths and showers.

While you're there, replace or wash hand towels and check that you have plenty of everyday essentials available.

Doing this now means one less job to worry about when weekday mornings become busy.

7. Wash Bedding, Towels and Other Everyday Fabrics

A home can look clean while still needing a refresh in the fabrics you use every day.

Before school starts, wash:

  • Bed linen and pillowcases
  • Towels
  • Reusable lunch bags
  • Washable blankets and throws
  • Cushion covers
  • Other removable fabrics according to their care instructions

Fresh bedding is particularly useful for bedrooms that have been used differently over the summer. It gives the whole house that clean, fresh-start feeling without requiring a huge amount of effort.

8. Freshen Up Sofas and Upholstery

Don't overlook sofas, chairs and other upholstered furniture.

Start by vacuuming upholstery thoroughly, including underneath cushions and in the gaps where crumbs and dust tend to collect. For removable covers, check the manufacturer's care instructions before washing.

If there are marks or stains, use a cleaning method that's appropriate for the particular fabric and always test a product on an inconspicuous area first. SonicScrubber comes with a soft (white) brush head, which can be used to agitate stains without being too abrasive on fabrics or shiny surfaces.

A quick upholstery refresh can make a noticeable difference, particularly after a summer of children, guests and family activities.

9. Check Cleaning Equipment

The end of summer is also a good opportunity to check the equipment you rely on to keep your home clean. The start of school term means your cleaning tools are likely to see a lot more action than they have for a few weeks.

If you use an air purifier, check the filter and replace it when required according to the manufacturer's instructions. Filters can collect dust, pollen and other particles over time, so keeping them maintained is an important part of getting the most from your appliance.

It's also worth checking your vacuum cleaner. Empty the dust container or bag, clean or replace filters where appropriate, and check the brush bar for hair and debris.

Give your washing machine a spruce up. It's a great time to run a washing machine cleaning product through your machine, to remove hidden dirt and limescale. Many machines have a cleaning cycle.

SonicScrubber is perfect for helping to clean inside washing machine drawers, which you can take out and clean in the sink. Whilst  they're out, don't forget to clean inside the drawer holder, where limescale can build up. Clean inside the door seals, wipe inside the door and don't forget to take out and wash the filter, it's normally at the bottom of the machine behind a little square drawer or a circular handle that you twist. Put down a towel or old nappy first and frequently water will come out of the filter when you open it up. Wash the filter with warm water in the sink, SonicScrubber can help get limescale out of the fiddly bits inside your filter before you put it back in.

Give your dishwasher a clean too. We like Crystale dishwasher cleaning products, but there are many to choose from. Remove the filter from the bottom of the dishwasher and remove any food debris that's built up and could clog your machine. Again, SonicScrubber can help clean filters, but also along the seals and edges inside your machine. Restock your salt whilst you are at it.

A few minutes of maintenance now can help your cleaning equipment work effectively when the school-year mess begins.

10. Restock Your Cleaning Supplies

There's nothing worse than discovering you've run out of cleaning essentials halfway through dealing with a spill.

Before the first day back, take a quick inventory of your cleaning cupboard. Make sure you have the basics you regularly use, such as:

  • Multi-purpose cleaner
  • Bathroom cleaner
  • Floor cleaner
  • Microfibre cloths
  • Sponges
  • Bin bags
  • Laundry detergent
  • Replacement SonicScrubber heads
  • Vacuum bags or replacement filters, if required

Keep frequently used products somewhere convenient and safely out of children's reach.

11. Create a Simple Cleaning Routine for the School Year

The biggest secret to maintaining a clean home during term time isn't necessarily doing more cleaning – it's preventing small jobs from becoming big ones.

Once school starts, introduce a simple routine that fits around your family's schedule.

For example:

Daily:
Spend 10–15 minutes clearing surfaces, dealing with kitchen mess and putting belongings back in their designated places.

Weekly:
Vacuum floors, mop hard floors, clean bathrooms, change bedding and wipe down high-touch surfaces.

Monthly:
Tackle less frequent jobs such as deeper carpet cleaning, upholstery, cupboards and other areas that don't need attention every week.

The aim isn't to keep your home perfectly spotless. It's to create manageable habits that stop everyday mess from becoming overwhelming.

12. Clean Inside The Car

The family car frequently turns into a taxi for kids during term time. So take the opportunity to give the interior a clean up. Give it a good vac, then use a narrow vac attachment to get the crumbs and debris that build up in the edges of seats.

Remove any car mats and clean them on both sides as well as the carpet underneath where they came from , before putting them back in .

SonicScrubber makes a tool to help cleaning the nooks and crannies of cars too, our Vehicle System is particularly good for getting muck out of children's car seats. Take them out and give them a good clean before lightly spritzing them with a suitable antibacterial spray. Don't forget to get all the crumbs and muck out from behind the seat before your put it back, especially around Isofix mounting points.

It's also a great time for cleaning inside the car too

Start the School Year With a Fresh Home

A back to school clean is about more than making your home look tidy. It's an opportunity to reset your space before the routines, homework, activities and busy mornings begin.

You don't need to deep clean your entire house in one weekend. Focus first on the areas that receive the most use, clear away unnecessary clutter, refresh your floors and fabrics, and make sure your kitchen and bathroom are ready for the weeks ahead.

Most importantly, don't put pressure on yourself to maintain a perfectly clean home every day. A simple, realistic cleaning routine will do far more for your home – and your sanity – than trying to tackle everything at once.

With a little preparation before the first day back, you can make the transition from relaxed summer days to busy school mornings feel that little bit easier.
